On Wednesday the 14th Y.E.R.M.O. will perform its first DJ set ever (involving live remixing) at MUDAM museum, Luxembourg.

We'll present a very eclectic selection of the music we love and that influences us such as early psych, noise, drones, old wild rockabilly, guitar ragas, folk and (good) neofolk, dark ambient, electroacoustic music and old school industrial delights. more

!! Those who will miss it can already note that on the 28th, a playlist carefully selected by Xavier and I will also be played there.

I've been spending the last two months creating the soundtrack of theater show Exils, by Fabrice Murgia (for whom I took care of Life:Reset / Chronique d'une ville épuisée's music in 2011).

The creation of Exils was a fascinating experiment though an exhausting period for me, as interdisciplinarity is a very challenging thing, especially within a team of 14 including a violinist, a sound engineer, two video artists, four actors, several technicians, two production assistants, heavy machinery, a human sized puppet, and lots, lots of artificial smoke.

The premiere was held this Tuesday in Brussels' National Theater, inaugurating the project Cities On Stage, financed by the European Commission. It was quite a delightful thing for me too see political deciders of several European countries, including EU president José Manuel Barroso and several cultural attaches enjoying very loud infrabasses (subwoofers were placed directly under the audience), distorted and noisy drones and percussions, strident tones and reverberated urban field recordings for an hour of complete weirdness, acoustic and visual interferences, semi-abstract images and oddly surreal situations. Above all, fantastic Senegalese actor Kabila (real name El Hadji Abdou Rahmane Ndiaye) was face and upper body painted in white, yelling at them, cursing about Europe's arrogance and pseudo democracy in Wolof language.

The show, that features 4 great actors (not only Kabila is amazing), is essentially focused on the topic of illegal immigration.

You can see it in Brussels till the 11th of February.

"Que souhaite-t-on réellement garder de ses souvenirs, et en quelle mesure la musique peut-elle y aider? Je crois d’abord, mais c’est sans doute se tromper de sens, je n’hésiterai pas à rebrousser chemin dans un instant, je crois d’abord que, peut-être à un degré moindre que l’odorat mais assez puissamment tout de même, la réécoute d’une musique stimule des images ou des contextes qui ont accompagné sa première découverte, ou un autre passage, pourvu que ladite musique ait pris une part importante, consciente ou non, à l’impression globale. Mais voilà, ce que je crois plus encore, c’est que la musique peut éveiller des sentiments mêlés, apparentés à une mémoire reconstituée, y compris une musique que l’on n’a jusque alors jamais entendue. La musique a ce pouvoir, et plus particulièrement le type de tissage bourdonnant auquel Yannick Franck apporte sa fibre. C’est une musique d’éveil au paysage, un fluide qui, si l’on n’aperçoit pas sa source, charrie ce qu’il a décollé des fonds d’un esprit encore rétif au langage. Pourvu qu’il le reste, la musique n’en garde que plus de pouvoir, et je sais qu’à chaque tentative de cette sorte, chaque traduction, j’attente à son charme. Pourtant… ces Memorabilia ouvrent les mêmes tiroirs que la poésie des profondeurs. Un ciel de brume, des nuages qui y courent rapidement, en reflet d’un sol qui ne lui dérobe qu’un peu de sa noirceur. L’ocre y domine encore, et ce que l’eau ou le vent pourraient procurer de mouvement dans ce paysage d’un soir arrêté, le rayon du drone l’exprime dans la musique. La ligne est décorée de plusieurs épaisseurs, qu’elles évoquent la lumière mélancolique de Troum, ou les banquises de Thomas Köner ; elle se courbe, s’augmente de souffles, remonte jusqu’au sol ces alluvions qu’elle a décollées. Ailleurs (sur le deuxième morceau), le relief apparaît, cordes et fantômes de percussions. En bordure, contrefaisant des chants éthérés, les fréquences ondoient à la manière de l’air chaud dans l’été. Voilà autant de souvenirs feints, ou plutôt portés par la musique. Ce sont les dessins de fond, les coups de pinceau les plus larges. Le détail y abonde aussi, tout aussi abstrait dans sa forme (répétons-le, en dehors du deuxième morceau, l’harmonie l’emporte toujours sur le rythme, et la mélodie est absente), résonances métalliques, aqueuses, filins grondants, réverbérations lumineuses, mais ce sont tout autant de détails orchestrés avec délicatesse, cousus sur la trame, donnant au décor de ces paysages recréés le creux et le saillant, le point et la crête, que l’esprit happé par tant de belle mélancolie finit d’inscrire au registre des émotions retrouvées."

Dear friends and followers,

I hope you're all doing well, taking good care of yourselves and making your lifes creative and inspiring.

These latest weeks have been full of obstacles and pretty damn exhausting but I'm now glad to be back at work, currently composing another original soundtrack for an ambitious theater project by Fabrice Murgia / Artara (Exils), working on musical collaborations (with british writer Nicholas Royle and musician JP Mathoul of band 48 Cameras + with Alan Trench of band Temple Music) and mixing a new Y.E.R.M.O. record with Jason & Xavier.

>> note that Y.E.R.M.O.'s spiritual father and partner in crime Gast Bouschet has just given a deeply interesting interview on this blog. Gast is interviewed by black metal focused artist and curator Amelia Ishmael, from US.

Finally, I'm really pleased to announce you that I'll perform this friday at EPAF Festival (Warsaw, Poland) and that I'll also perform next sunday in Antwerpen, in a small art galery located in the Borgerhout area, at the occasion of an exhibition called What You See is Not What You See's finissage: this is the invitation.

The European Performance Art Festival EPAF2011 will be held at the Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle for the sixth time. Each year the festival takes on a different form, hosting performance art artists from around the world. Each subsequent edition of the festival is an attempt to show trends and ways of evolution for this species of art, and to also show the creativity of these young artists. This year sixteen artists from twelve countries have been invited to participate. Ten of these artists were selected through the open EPAF program which is targeted at young artists. The keynote of this year's edition is an attempt to capture the relationship between artists that make up the culture of the East and West. Meeting artists that are of the younger and middle generation, whose work was rooted on the outskirts of different cultures is an opportunity to create a common platform for dialogue and mutual inspiration. The confrontation of different artistic attitudes, is an inexhaustible source of reflection on the differences and similarities in not only art, but also the world.
The Chinese festival consists of four artists. Chen Jin, in addition to her artistic activity. She is also the curator of the OPEN festival for a continuous 12 years, initially starting in Beijing and now in Shanghai. Yingmei Duan, belonged to the legendary East Village artists, formed in Beijing in the 90s, forming independent avant-garde art. She studied performance art at the laboratory of Marina Abramovic in Braunshweigu. Another artist, He Chengyao is one of the first who undertook China’s problem with femininity and the naked body, she participated in the exhibition Global Feminism at the Brooklyn Museum in 2007. The fourth artist invited is Cui Tao, representing the young generation of performance artists in China.

The open program – open EPAF is strongly differentiated in terms of artists selected by the media. Viewers will have the opportunity to see performances based solely on the artist's exploration of carnality, as well as those where the action is inextricably linked with technology.
During the festival, in addition to performances, block therpay will take place, including meetings and discussions with artists, with critics, and art historians, demonstrations and presentations of the video performance.

Recording sessions at Croxhapox Art Center, Ghent

I'll be recording this whole week at Croxhapox Art Center, Ghent. The sessions are based on experimenting with feedback and natural resonance and are being recorded by sound maestro Aymeric de Tapol. The recordings will be edited and will be the base material for a CD release.

With the precious support of SMart foundation and Croxhapox

The sessions will end with a solo public performance followed by Swedish live acts Sand Circles (Not not fun) and Quilts (Hockey Rawk) on Saturday (August the 13th).

Cette année, le Festival de Liège a fait la part belle à la musique avec des spectacles aux titres évocateurs comme Play Loud, du célèbre metteur en scène allemand habitué des lieux, Falk Richter ; Dieu est un Dj, du jeune talent wallon émergeant mis à l'honneur, Fabrice Murgia ; enfin Lyrics from Lockdown, une pièce de théâtre musical de slam, de hip-hop, de l'américain Bryonn Bain.

Témoin de l'importance de la place accordée aux jeunes talents et à la musique dans le Festival, le musicien, plasticien et performeur Yannick Franck s'est retrouvé invité à collaborer à deux projets où le statut de la musique était différent : la performance Collision Zone de Gast Bouchet et Nadine Hilbert, ainsi que la pièce Chronique d'une ville épuisée. Life : reset de Fabrice Murgia.

Yannick Franck, qui aime à se définir, selon les termes de son ami artiste Benoît Pierre, comme un « plasticien sonore » en raison de sa formation initiale aux arts plastiques à l'Académie des Beaux Arts de Liège, a commenté cette ouverture du Festival à la musique au cours de notre entretien : « Il y a chez Jean-Louis Colinet une curiosité et un intérêt évidents vis-à-vis du son comme élément signifiant au sein du théatre contemporain. C'est en fait également issu d'une volonté chez lui d'ouvrir le festival aux pratiques performatives au sens large, et non de se figer dans une vision traditionnelle des arts de la scène. C'est une démarche que je tiens à saluer, car elle est courageuse et demeure trop rare ».

Et effectivement, cette ouverture s'est fait remarquer avec Collision Zone, une performance à la singulière étrangeté au sein de la programmation d'un festival de spectacles vivants et des arts de la scène qui se centre généralement sur le théâtre. C'était une expérience à part entière mettant en présence, dans la salle obscure du Manège, des improvisations électroacoustiques des deux membres du groupe Y.E.R.M.O. seuls en scène, et des images bleutées projetées sur trois grands écrans par Gast Bouschet et Nadine Hilbert.

Par son dispositif, ce spectacle ne tentait pas de dissimuler ses musiciens, mais les plaçait à l'avant-plan sur la scène même. Bien que relativement dissimulés dans une pénombre savamment recherchée pour ne pas interférer avec la projection des images, les deux musiciens constituaient la seule présence vivante de ce spectacle.

Cette oeuvre engagée dénonçait, par l'articulation de sonorités électroniques expérimentales et d'images vidéographiques, le clivage grandissant entre les continents africain et européen au travers, notamment, des problèmes suscités par les politiques de gestion de l'immigration en Europe.

Le choix de Y.E.R.M.O. pour réaliser des improvisations n'avait rien d'étrange quand on considère ces propos de Yannick Franck : « Je crois que j'ai une pulsion créatrice omniprésente et assez affirmée, stimulée par un rapport singulier au monde, marqué en fait par un sentiment de profond désaccord et de non-appartenance à mon contexte, quel qu'il soit. J'essaie surtout de créer un dialogue avec ce contexte et de trouver des stratégies pour le comprendre et y définir ma position. Quelle que soit la discipline à laquelle j'ai recours, je cherche à créer des brèches, des passages vers d'autres états de conscience, à altérer notre appréhension du réel. Ça explique en définitive pas mal de mes activités ».

Collision Zone

Le « plasticien sonore » travaille depuis quelques années dans le milieu théâtral, notamment avec les compagnies Artara ou Trotz Ensemble, pour lesquelles il compose des bandes-son interprétées en direct ou enregistrées. C'est également ce qu'il a fait dans sa collaboration avec Fabrice Murgia pour Chronique d'une ville épuisée. Life: reset.

Pour la pièce de Fabrice Murgia, la bande-son à été composée tout au long de la création, sur base d'improvisations lors des répétitions. « Au départ, la musique devait être interprétée en direct. Il a même été question de me mettre en scène, suspendu au-dessus du plateau dans une boîte en plexiglas ! Mais les contraintes techniques [ont] fait que c'est finalement une bande enregistrée qui est utilisée dans le spectacle » raconte Yannick Franck, qui est ainsi resté aux commandes derrière les gradins, dans un schéma plus traditionnel.

Néanmoins, voir émerger au Festival de Liège Collision Zone et des spectacles mettant en avant des musiques nouvelles ravit Yannick Franck, car « la musique a trop longtemps été utilisée afin d'illustrer, d'accompagner l'acte théâtral, alors qu'elle peut aujourd'hui y être considérée au sein du théâtre comme un élément signifiant à part entière, au même titre que les autres ».

Pour lui, la présence de la musique électronique est même indispensable au théâtre, car « elle représente une part importante de la création sonore actuelle ». Et il ajoute très à propos : « Mais il faut bien dire qu'il s'agit souvent de démonstrations de moyens technologiques plutôt que d'œuvres véritablement habitées. On se laisse trop souvent berner par les effets en perdant aussitôt l'essentiel, la force du propos [...]. Un autre danger aujourd'hui est celui de théâtraliser le musicien à outrance. Les metteurs en scène ont malheureusement très souvent tendance à instrumentaliser les intervenants auxquels il font appel ; ça perd alors beaucoup d'intérêt, à mon sens, puisqu'on est alors plus que dans la représentation. C'est pourquoi je me sens beaucoup plus proche de l'idée de performance ou d'action théâtrale que de théâtre à proprement parler ».

Cette déclaration dialogue bien avec celle de Jean-Louis Collinet, lors d'une rencontre avec les élèves du Master en Arts du Spectacle de Liège, le 10 février dernier, et durant laquelle il entendait « renouveler le théâtre avec des jeunes artistes qui ont quelque chose à dire, plutôt qu'une volonté de démonstration d'un savoir-faire ».

Un point de vue sur le monde et une véritable patte sont effectivement deux caractéristiques du jeune Yannick Franck qui compte bien se réaliser pleinement en tant qu'artiste à l'esthétique propre. Et encore une fois, cette dernière tient à l'idée de performance en tant que proposition d'expérience unique à vivre et à faire vivre : « J'aime en fait tout ce qui transpire une certaine ferveur, une force, une rugosité. Je n'ai jamais accordé aucune importance à la virtuosité ou à la technique. Je crois qu'il faut faire corps avec les outils, les instruments que l'on choisit en tant que musicien, et surtout exprimer une certaine urgence, affirmer notre étrangeté au lieu de tenter de la cacher [...] ».

Pour cet artiste, il faut « Changer notre rapport aux "arts vivants"[pour] véritablement les vivre et les donner à vivre. Sortir de la représentation pour aller vers l'incarnation, voire l'incantation, lorsque nous revisitons un texte, une œuvre existante ».

La collaboration de Yannick Franck avec Fabrice Murgia, Gast Bouschet et Nadine Hilbert s'est faite dans « un cheminement naturel », car Y.E.R.M.O. travaillait déjà depuis 2004 avec ces deux derniers, tandis « qu'avec Fabrice Murgia, la rencontre s'est produite, car nous travaillons de temps à autre ensemble pour les Ateliers de la Colline, qui est une compagnie de théâtre jeune public, lui en tant que comédien et moi-même en tant que technicien du son ».

Néanmoins, travailler pour le théâtre n'est pas chose aisée pour un compositeur. « C'est avant tout une rencontre, parfois difficile [parce que] que je refuse de prendre certains chemins s'ils me semblent trop en désaccord avec l'esthétique sonore que je développe. Mais j'essaie de rester souple ; il faut parfois essayer des tas de choses dont on sait qu'elles ne marcheront pas [...]. Le théâtre intègre tellement d'éléments que ça relève parfois véritablement du miracle ».

Cette difficulté est davantage palpable quand il s'agit de collaborer à deux projets très différents. « Il s'agit de démarches, d'approches totalement différentes. Chronique d'une Ville épuisée est un projet basé sur une trame extrêmement précise, répétée. C'est une forme proprement théâtrale, mise en scène, alors que Collision Zone est une projection vidéo et une improvisation sonore ».

Cependant, quand il s'agit de travailler pour le théâtre, le jeu en vaut la chandelle. « Il y a toujours quelque chose de fantastique quand on finit par trouver une formule qui fonctionne au théâtre, [et] ce sont de très beaux moments. La rencontre avec Fabrice Murgia [a été] d'une grande richesse, la création de Chronique d'une Ville épuisée ayant été une véritable aventure sur le plan artistique ».

Tandis qu'en parlant de son expérience au Festival de Liège, « Un Festival qui interroge le Présent », Yannick Franck ajoute : « La pertinence de ce slogan est évidente pour moi, la programmation du festival étant résolument actuelle et sans compromis. À mon sens, l'art, qu'il soit théâtral, musical ou autre, se doit d'être bien plus qu'un agrément. En plus d'offrir un ailleurs, d'être un moyen temporaire d'évasion, de rêve, de proposer une expérience forte, il se doit de questionner son époque, ses valeurs, l'ordre des choses, afin de pousser à la réflexion. D'être un vecteur potentiel d'éveil ».

Souhaitons à Yannick une longue carrière musicale faite de collaborations enrichissantes avec le théâtre, et qui sait, peut-être encore avec le Festival de Liège.

Mustalampi is a 11 min. track that has been recorded in august 2010 by Jari Suominen, FI (prepared piano and organ, Jari plays in bands Shogun Kunitoki and Kiila) and Yannick Franck (objects and bow, feedback, distorsion, electronic processing, mix).

The track's name refers to a pound of dark water located in Nuuksio National Park, in Espoo, Finland.

[FR] L'installation se compose de demi-sphères transparentes posées au sol et contenant de petits monticules de sel. Sur ce sel sont projetées des vidéos de bruit de télévision animant chaque capsule et les faisant scintiller.
Une bande sonore proche d'un tremblement d'air accorde les vidéos et de temps en temps provoque un faisceau lumineux qui vient scanner le sel. L'installation fait penser à une bulle du monde multipliée, devenant des cellules isolées et hermétiques ou des microcontinents insulaires.

[EN] The installation consists of transparent semi-spheres placed on the ground and containing small mounds of salt. On the salt are projected TV noise videos, animating each capsule by making them flickering.
A soundtrack as an air tremor blends the videos and occasionally causes a light beam to scan the mounds.
The installation reminds of a multiplied bubble of the world, the capsules are isolated, as hermetic cells or microcontinent islands.

The installation Rehabilitation consists of a photograph and a soundtrack of 57'53''.
The photograph documents an action that took place in October 2010 under a motorway bridge located between the towns of Liers and Milmort (near Liège, Belgium).

For over ten years I passed under this bridge quite regularly, and all the while I was intrigued by the phrase on the wall " SAUVONS-NOUS ", signed " AJ López ". I have always associated it with a highly poetic gesture, inviting a lot of possible interpretations. Is it a simple quotation? A political action? A conscious act in relation to the context of these neighbourhoods, commercial areas, disembodied traffic areas, non-places?

Then I discovered that the bridge had recently been repainted. Realizing the importance I had given to this graffiti over the years, I decided to restore it, and reproduced the inscription by memory.

The sound piece was recorded at night, under a bridge in the small town of Kemijärvi in the Finnish part of Lapland during winter in 2008. For more than ten years, Kemijärvi’s population has been declining, due to the gradual relocation of its companies (mainly paper manufacturers).

L’installation Réhabilitation #001 est composée d’une photographie et d’une bande son de 57’53’’.

La photographie documente une action réalisée le 21 octobre 2010 sous un pont d’autoroute situé entre les communes de Liers et de Milmort (Belgique, région liégeoise).

L’inscription SAUVONS-NOUS, signée AJ López et que j’ai regardée en passant régulièrement sous ce pont depuis plus de dix ans, m’a depuis lors intrigué. Je l’ai toujours associée à un geste extrêmement poétique, ouvrant énormément d’interprétations possibles.
Simple citation? Acte militant, contestataire? Geste conscient en relation avec le contexte de ces quartiers-zonings, lieux de passage désincarnés, non-lieux?

Me rendant compte de l’importance que j’avais donnée à ce graffiti, j’ai décidé de le restaurer. Ayant découvert, en me rendant sur place, que le pont avait été repeint récemment, je me suis contenté de reproduire l’inscription de mémoire.

La pièce sonore a été enregistrée la nuit, sous un pont dans la petite ville de Kemijärvi, dans la partie finlandaise de la Laponie, durant l’hiver 2006.

Kemijärvi est depuis une dizaine d’années de plus en plus désertée par ses habitants, exode dû à la fermeture progressive de ses entreprises (principalement des fabricants de papier).

O Dreamland was based on a movie of the same name, a Lindsay Anderson's documentary, filmed in 1953 in an amusement park in England. At some point, the viewer can see a glittering picture of a little genius, stating through a scroll: " The
dreams I dream are yours to see,* over there in reality. "

Having created a loop out of this short passage, I used its sound as sole source to recreate a soundtrack.  Combined to this new sound, the loop alters the viewer’s perception in a hypnotic, dreamlike way.

Présentation:

Le projet Wanderers of the Wasteland rassemble quatre jeunes artistes dont les préoccupations se rejoignent autour d’une même thématique: celle de la frontière entre le réel et ses représentations dans le contexte de la vie contemporaine, et en particulier de l’influence de ces représentations sur notre rapport au monde.

Nous partons du constat que les systèmes de représentation actuels introduisent insidieusement dans nos vies un glissement vers une dimension dans laquelle le fantasme, l’idée figurée, hantent leur contexte même. La vie quotidienne se trouvant envahie par une surenchère d’informations qui perturbent notre compréhension du monde, stimulant constamment notre inconscient.

Nous rendons au réel une image de lui même, qui s’y fond et s’y confond de sorte que la représentation, partie intégrante du monde physique, est aussi vraie que nature. La distinction signal/bruit, devenant alors de plus en plus indéfinissable, confuse, nous amène à appréhender le monde avec une distance forcée, les choses n’étant devenue que des concepts abstraits, des idées de choses.

L’intention de ce projet est d’inviter les artistes à hanter à leur tour cette réalité, par divers artifices, en participant à ses mutations afin d’interroger les mécanismes qui l’habitent. Il s’agit ici d’avantage d’en déplacer, court-circuiter, saboter, remuer, mélanger, entrechoquer, déformer, intervertir ou encore altérer les constituants que de tenter d’ajouter encore quelque décor, situation, narration ou affirmation.

Objets détournés, matériaux diaphanes, fragments semi-abstraits d’images collectées, enregistrements de terrain altérés, voix tout juste perceptibles suspendues dans les airs forment un espace de libre association pour le spectateur, sondant ainsi cette frontière mouvante. Comme s’il était convié à l’envers du décor à des fins tant réflexives que curatives, libératoires.

Le nom du projet a été inspiré par le titre d’un film muet de 1924, réalisé par Irvin Willat et basé sur un roman de Zane Grey. Ce western est aujourd’hui officiellement recensé comme disparu, la dernière copie connue ayant été retrouvée par le cinéaste en 1971, décomposée. Le nom du film Wanderer of the Wasteland, littéralement : “le vagabond du pays du gaspillage” nous a semblé inspirant à plus d’un titre: d’abord pour les possibilités d’association avec ce qui nous préoccupe, ce “pays du gaspillage” étant ici le contexte du libre échange, la société du productivisme, de la surconsommation aveugle dans laquelle nous évoluons. Mais aussi pour les possibilités d’extrapolation qui découlent du fait de la disparition du film. Nos wanderers, ici tant les artistes que les spectateurs, sont invités à prendre part à la vie d’un espace privilégié, dans lequel le sens commun est altéré, habité par la poésie d’un légitime recyclage, d’un cathartique détournement.

Yannick Franck est artiste sonore, compositeur et plasticien. Il développe depuis 2005 une pratique multiple, au sein de laquelle les différentes disciplines qu’il explore évoluent en parallèle, sans hiérarchie.

L'impulsion qui le pousse au geste créatif est avant tout un goût immodéré pour le fait de développer des stratégies afin d'altérer le réel. D’en déplacer des éléments choisis en vue de définir une approche personnelle de celui-ci, un positionnement tant artistique que purement existentiel.

Yannick Franck tend à habiter le réel en donnant à percevoir des présences sonores ou plastiques visant à une modification de l’état de conscience, soit par l’invitation à la réflexion (voir par exemple sa contre-campagne politique Be Careful What You Wish For) soit par une forme de transgression esthétique (Foghorns Continuum) ou encore en perturbant volontairement la perception (Isolatie Ruimte).

La problématique récurrente de Yannick Franck relève donc de la remise en question, de l'invitation à reconcevoir nos valeurs, qu'elles soient esthétiques, sociétales ou encore politiques par la création d'entités subjectives.

En introduisant ces éléments dans l’espace public (voire en soulignant la relativité de leur objectivité par un processus de recontextiualisation Yannick Franck interroge les possibles postures de l’être dans le contexte actuel.

Immersie Ruimte, 2010

Immersie Ruimte is an installation that takes place in a container. In this confined space, the visitor is alternately immersed in darkness, accompanied by a loud noise presence, and in silent light.

The intention is to test the effects of such abrupt changes of sound and visual environment. More broadly Immersie Ruimte deals with isolation and loss of orientation.

Resonant Frequencies

This next week end (17th and 18th of October), I'll present a new in situ sound installation in Gent. A work based on improvisations that I did using several found objects, mainly scrap metal and test tubes.

Here are the informations about the exhibition:

RESONANT FREQUENCIES is a meeting between several artists from different creative horizons, gathered around the common concern of working in situ.

Both on a personal level (individuality of the techniques and developed aesthetics, idiosyncracy of one’s creative process) and on a collective level (great importance given to the consistency of collective decisions and the coherence of the whole project’s scenography) the artists ambition to confront their visions to the place’s very aspects and specificities.

“The natural frequency, or frequencies, of any physical system or object are the frequencies at which it will vibrate if physically disturbed.”

“Resonance is the phenomenon that occurs when a physical system is periodically disturbed at the same period of one of its natural frequencies.”

Y.E.R.M.O. - Collision Zone / From Gold Falls a Bad Rain : review in FEAR DROP [French]

La musique de Yannick Franck, pour aussi évanescente qu’elle puisse parfois paraître, a toujours semblé plus proche du cuivre que du silicium, de la terre que du plastique, en un mot bien plus organique que synthétique. Celle qu’il pratique en duo avec Xavier Dubois sous le nom de Y.E.R.M.O. n’échappe pas à ce commentaire et, à l’instar de Troum dans un domaine power romantic, Y.E.R.M.O. est un échange d’ondes de cordes, d’effets, de field recordings. Des pièces qui ne s’agencent pas en pavage ni en strates, mais en une solution que toute métaphore rapprochera tôt ou tard de l’alchimie. Sur l’album Collision zone, on assiste à la transformation au cœur même de l’athanor, où rougeoie un bourdon de guitare, déjà noir de sa combustion mais dont émanent tout d’abord de loin en loin quelques réverbérations cristallisées. Qui a déjà observé un foyer au moment où tout n’est plus que braises, a sûrement contemplé ce spectacle, quand le rouge et le noir alternent dans un mouvement de pulsation organique, obsédant, fascinant. De là prend forme et s’élève dans la brume noise un riff de basse, réminiscent de Godflesh, participant à son tour au brouillard métallique. Dans From gold falls a bad rain, un album sorti presque simultanément, l’or est déjà atteint, et l’on pénètre instantanément dans la résonance accordée de la basse et du bourdon. L’une et l’autre s’oxydent, quittant alors la pureté du métal noble, comme l’action corrode la réalité en exécutant le rêve. Au loin, le métal réverbéré s’augmente d’un drone de voix, puis d’une volée tout entière de syllabes dépenaillées, à la façon dont le vent assimile et porte le froufroutement qu’il provoque dans les feuilles. C’est la condensation de l’élément refondu, vaporisé, et il n’en faut pas plus pour entendre toute la musique de Y.E.R.M.O. comme le cycle organisé du bourdon de corde.

Feu l'Artifice, 2010

Sound performance and video installation, excerpt (turn up the volume or listen with headphones!)

Feu l’artifice is a temporary alteration of the public sound space. 
A 29”02’ firework recording (that was done in Liège, Belgium during the summer 2007) is diffused at an extremely loud volume from the rooftop of a great city center building.

This performance has been shown at the 2nd international Young Art Biennial, Moscow 2010.

Foghorns Continuum

Foghorns Continuum is a sound performance that took place in June 2010 in Ghent.

I connected several foghorns to reversed vacuum cleaners and made them sound for 45’ from the rooftops of the Public Library (Bibliotheek Gent), the Shopping Center (Zuid), the University Library (Boekentoren) and the cultural center Vooruit.

The idea behind this piece was to create a temporary acoustic alteration of the urban space through the integration of a drone music composition. Though most people are unfamiliar with this type of sound, drone music is quite common in eastern spiritual music and has been widely used in western contemporary music. It’s, according to reviewer Callum Zeff, " about as far away from music as you can get before it stops being music " and often generates an impression of permanence that may alter the sense of time.

Sabrina Harri (°1979, Finlande) et Alexia de Ville de Goyet (°1982, Belgique) se sont rencontrées par hasard à Helsinki en 2005.

Elles travaillent ensemble depuis lors, se consacrant à différents médiums tels la performance vidéo, la sculpture et l'installation. Leur positionnement esthétique pour le moins singulier fait toutefois écho aux sculpteurs minimalistes des années 60, rappelant du point de vue formel cette esthétique de l'absolu qu'elles aiment altérer délibérément pour que s'y reflète en contraste une thématique beaucoup plus proche de la condition humaine: la perte d'orientation que révèle la solitude existentielle de l'individu dans le monde actuel.

Les surfaces de leurs sculptures, bien que fines et diaphane, évoquent une standardisation aveugle et aseptisée. Parois étouffantes, totalitaires, dans lesquelles résonnent de lointains fragments narratifs, présences toutes suggestives d'une vie intérieure qui tend à s'effacer mais ne disparait jamais totalement.

À l'occasion de leur nouvelle exposition, Harri et de Goyet investiront la Galerie Sinne avec trois nouvelles installations incluant sculpture, son et vidéo.

Sabrina Harri (b. 1979, Finland) and Alexia de Ville de Goyet (b. 1982, Belgium) met by chance in Helsinki in 2005. They work together since then, engaged in various mediums such as video performance, sculpture and installation.

Altough singular, their works recall the minimalist sculptors of the 60s. An absolutist aesthetic that they deliberately distort, developing a thematic that is much closer to the human condition: the loss of direction that reveals the existential loneliness of the individual in the contemporary world.

The surfaces of their sculptures, although thin and diaphanous, evoke a blind and sterile standardization. Stifling, totalitarian walls in which resonates some distant narrative fragments, representative of an inner life that tends to fade out, yet never completely disappears.

At the occasion of their new exhibition, Harri and Goyet invest Gallery Sinne with three new pieces, including sculpture, sound and video.

Ensi vaikutelma heidän työstään tuo mieleen 60- luvun amerikkalaiset minimaaliset veistokset. Tämän ehdottomuuden estetiikan he tietoisesti vääristävät kehittääkseen teeman, joka on paljon lähempänä ihmisen olemusta: elämänsuunnan katoaminen nykymaailman yksilön eksistentiaalisessa yksinäisyydessä.

Veistoksien pinnat, vaikka ohuet ja läpikuultavat, tuovat mieleen steriilin ja sokean standardoinnin.Tukahduttavat, totalitääriset seinämät, joissa kaikuu jotain kaukaisia katkelmia, heijastuksia. Nämä tuntuvat ilmentävän sisäistä elämää, joka on katoamaisillaan mutta kuitenkin vielä läsnä.

Foghorns Continuum

Foghorns Continuum is a sound performance that will be held this Saturday June the 26th in Ghent, within the Timelab Electrified Summercamp's public presentation day.

In short, I'll connect some foghorns to some reversed vacuum cleaners and make them sing for half an hour from the rooftops of several buildings in the center of the city. Those building are: the Public Library (Openbare Bibliotheek), the Shopping Center (Zuid) which is facing the library, the University Library (Boekentoren) and the Vooruit Cultural Center.

The intention is to to create a continuum within the public sound space, to make these notes resonate, vibrate in the air and swirl into the wind in order to create a temporary acoustic alteration of the urban space.

To me, making this fermata the main actual content of a performance is somehow a symbolic rite, a way to celebrate change, the possible ending, always temporary but how liberating, of established things.

Despite it's massively used by football supporters, this type of horn is formerly used by sailors to indicate the presence of their ship to the others. It's thus a rapturous way for me to assert my presence in Ghent, where I live and work for a little more than one year.

The appointment is set at 4pm (sharp!) in the Koning Albert Park at the foot of the public library (openbare bibliotheek).

Polyamide Foghorns

I just received these polyamide foghorns.

It's possible to tune them as well as the metallic ones but it's even more random than it was, since those ones' tabs are polyamide. So basically what I'm going to do is tuning the metallic ones according to those ones... More soon about that...

Tuning the Foghorns

Just before my departure to Helsinki for our duo exhibition with Sabrina Harri (named HALO), we met in Citadelpark (Gent) with composer Thomas Smetryns, who lives in the neighborhood and to whom I asked for some help with tuning the foghorns.
I'd figured out earlier that these horns were actually possible to tune by carefully folding the small tab in the spout. Proceeding this way, we have then tried out several combinations of notes in order to create different intervals. But having blown a few times, we've realized that the horns had a tendency to tune down very quickly, what actually makes the use of a tritone anecdotal and not very interesting nor relevant in reality.

So I made the decision that I will tune the horns myself intuitively, simply by making them sounding together in a way I like. I'll have to figure out how it will sound whithin it's increasingly detuning.

As the performance should last twenty minutes at least, it may well be that the notes will be changing dramatically randomly. Several important factors are to be taken in consideration, such as the gradual heating of the air coming out the foghorns, that could significantly expand the metal strips.

I'll make some tests within the upcoming days...

Tritone part 2

Yesterday we met up with Lies Vanborm, who's taking care of making the performance possible, she asks the authorizations and does this part of the work I must admit I dislike. She has a challenging mind and she's so enthusiastic that I really feel confortable with bringing up my eccentric ideas. Quite nice I must say.

We went up on the higher balcony the University Library (That people use to call De Boekentoren, this is the highest spot in the university neigbourhood) and made a test with the foghorns, connected to a pocket (600w) vacuum cleaner. Lies went back down the street and waved signals at me, confirming that the sound was perceptible from there, which amazed me.

We went afterwards to the City Library (Stads Bibliotheek). Where we had to acces the roof through some office windows. People were very kind and helpful but scared out that we were getting on the rooftop, tough a performance took place lately on this same spot, but the artist (who's performance was to wander up there dressed up as a beggar, taking pictures of the watching people) had a lot of security precautions to take.
Another problem was that the day of the performance coincides with the student's last revision day before the exams. But since the performance is supposed to take place during the very last opening hour, they felt more relaxed with the idea.

It was impossible to plug the vacuum there for now so I just blowed a few times in my horns. A women (certainly an employed in a office) started yelling the same note at a window from the facing building, attracting my attention for some reason. Then after a while people from the city administration right beside the library started to stare at me at their windows with severe yet interrogative facial expressions.

The sound of the horns, and its natural delay was quite beautiful up there. I really look forward to the moment I'll turn the vacuums on, followed progressively by the other ones, (actioned by volunteers) upon the Vooruit, the University Library and the Belfort (yet to be confirmed). If everything works as expected, this will happen on June the 26th at 4pm...

Ant Shapes, 2006

This series was based on an observation of the movement of ants, translated into drawings.

Using some rectangular paper sheets lying on the floor, I tried my best to follow the ants' movements while they were circulating on the paper. I adapted the presure on the pen according to their speed, pushing lighter when the ants moved faster, stronger when they were slower.

Each drawing started when an ant arrived on the paper and finished when this first ant or another one (they were several on the drawing above for instance) left the rectangle.

I decided to take a break each time my concentration dropped, and to keep drawing on the same paper until I was satisfied with the drawing. Some of them are then quite minimal (when only a ant or two passed on it very briefly,) and some other drawings are very dense.

Within 10 days, I had created a set of 16 drawings, which were part of my second solo exhibition at Flux Gallery in fall 2006.

My work comes from a constant need for experimentation in different media.

I am interested in the shifting boundaries between the real and the unreal, the possible crossing points.

I'm looking for means to transpose dreams, fantasies, visions and inner changes in daily life.

By inhabiting realness with intuitive and non-rational elements, I question the possible postures of the being in contemporary societies.

Yannick Franck (°1981, Liège, Belgium) is a sound and visual artist. He lives and works in Gent, Belgium.

He works in different disciplines in which he constantly reinvents himself through the use of media such as photography, video, installation and performance.

He runs the independent label Idiosyncratics Records.

He is the founder of electroacoustic project Y.E.R.M.O., in which he's active since 2005 with musician Xavier Dubois. The duo composed the soundtrack of an exhibition called Collision Zone (Venice Biennale 2009, Pavilion of Luxembourg) by Nadine Hilbert and Gast Bouschet.

He composes soundtracks and performs live music for dance, theater and art films.

Yannick Franck took part in many international projects (including exhibitions, residencies, publishing projects and collaborations with other artists) and has performed in many countries.

The Tree of the Knowledge of the Sight of Evil

This is a genuine picture of an Antoinist ceremony (that they used to call an Operation), found at my friend's Antoine Van Impe in Liège.
My grandmother was an adept of this micro sect founded in the 1910 in the environs of Liège by the Father Antoine and his wife, the Mother Antoine. The cult was a singular crossover of Christianism, Spiritism and theosophy. I personally think it has some aspects of Japanese Zen (absurd like, paradoxical, and often anti-dogmatic statements for instance).

Father Antoine, who was a healer, used to say that he didn't heal anybody, the suffering people came to him just to find the strength to heal themselves.

In his writings, such as The Revelation of the Ten Principles of God by the Father (see the French version here), Antoine is often highly simplistic and sometimes quite awkward in his formulations, with a mystifying tone that doesn't seem to be very intentional.

On their official emblem you can read their motto: "The Tree of the Knowledge of the Sight of Evil", which is weirdly formulated and sound quite mysterious even in french, though it's the language in which it was originally written by Louis Antoine.

As a teenager, it has been fascinating to me when I found out that my grandmother had been an adept of the cult (she was above all a christian and she rarely mentioned this period of her life, but she didn't have any problems to talk about it when I used to ask).

It is a quite idiosyncratic spirituality, as far as I know the only one that was created in a Walloon working class context (Antoine was formerly a miner, then a metal worker). I've even read on the internet that Antoinism was the only belgian religion.

Till the 90's the sect increased in Northern France and in several countries such as Brazil. It isn't today very popular anymore and the cult decreased a lot in the latest years, although browsing on the internet I found a few books on the subject, several websites, and even a few Facebook fan pages (some of them nevertheless seem to have been created rather for ironic, fun making purposes than for people who'd be sincerely devoted to the cult).

What a thrill it was to have discovered this amazing CD in my mailbox this morning! A few months ago, Y.E.R.M.O. took part to this project called Chthonian music that have been brilliantly orchestrated by sound artist Pietro Riparbelli. The project was first a sound installation inside a roman cistern hosted within the Archeological Parc of San Vincenzino (Italy), click here for more informations on Pietro's website.

The CD will be soon released on Italian label Radical Matters as a limited edition. It's yet to be confirmed, but here will most probably be a reissue as a larger print on UK label Cold Spring Records.

Tritone (Working title)

In music, in the Middle Ages, Diabolus in Musica (literally "devil in music") was the name given to the presence of an interval of three tones (now called Tritone). This interval (diminished fifth) creates an expectation or a tension for the listener, as opposed to a perfect fifth, which produces a calming and conclusive effect also called resolution.

This is a performance project I'll have the opportunity to develop in June during Electrified Summercamp 2010

The idea is to perform a tritone as a continuum/drone from the top of high buildings of Gent, using manual fog horns, each connected to an inverted vacuum cleaner.

First tryout next week on the top of the Vooruit, I'm dying to hear how it will sound...

Fishes, 2007

I had once noticed this aquarium in a Turkish snack and ever since I wanted to film it. The fishes themselves had nothing remarkable, the fascinating thing for me was the whole little mise en scène. A wonderful ready made, illustrating so perfectly several of my own moment's concerns. Among those concerns was the obsession "What is real, what is not?" on the top of the list. I found there such a materialization of this question. This installation was full of trompe l'oeils and confusing combinations of visual elements ("bogus" ones and "real" ones), such as the fishes: you could rarely positively affirm that you were actually seing a fish or its reflexion. In their motion's abstract patterns one even eventually disapeared when it was comming though a certain angle, hidden by the reflection of a glass wall on another.

In one of the three sequences the camera's inclination gives you the impression that the air bubbles are comming straight out the electrical socket in the background... Add to this the television (eventually broadcasting some documentary films about animals...) upon the aquarium, the phoney rocks within, the washed-out, peeling off mountain wall paper, the wooden chairs, the radio noises, then figure out the smells of Kebab meat, then you got an accomplished post modern vision, a demonstration of the absolute ambiguity of our times. Where the erzatz become real and hard "real" object belong to the realm of images, ideas.

Easter Improv with Plochingen

We planned to play together with Plochingen (who also plays in electronic improv collective Martiens Go Home) since quite a while and it finally happened. His partner Fabienne (who took the picture btw) and him invited me to perform in their appartment this monday afternoon and we improvised together for a bit more than an fourty minutes.

What you can hear here is an unprocessed recording of the performance, I've just cut/shortened it a bit without even changing the equalization or anything.

Benoit, who was playing on a laptop (as he always does) was processing some sounds from his personal database in real time as well as the sounds I was producing using several objects, my voice and some effects + mixing board. There was a lot of listening between us and we both had a fine moment together, there was a perceptible tension in the soundscapes. The audience seemed very alert as well. A fine easter monday.

"Le bourdon (ou drone, du terme anglais) désigne, en terme de technique musicale, une ou plusieurs cordes ou anches qui vibrent toujours sur la même note ou forment un accord continu avec la tonique ou la dominante. Dans certaines musiques traditionnelles (indiennes notamment), il acquiert un sens en ce qu’il est lié à la pratique de la prière et de la méditation. Le drone en tant que véhicule de sens, a priori, ne fait pas partie de l’héritage de la musique occidentale… jusqu’au milieu du siècle dernier en tout cas. Certains compositeurs sont parvenus à faire du son continu le vecteur d’un sens nouveau en remettant en cause la notion de musique, notamment par un abandon de la construction narrative, propre à la culture occidentale. On substitue à la structure et à la tension de l’auditeur vers une fin (fuite en avant, perspective téléologique qui a conditionné la pensée de l’Occident jusqu’à la fin de la modernité) une conscience de l’instant, d’un présent vécu. Dès les premières secondes, tout semble donné ; la consistance du son doit primer.

Dans le sillage de ces expériences est né, à la fin du siècle dernier, le drone en tant que genre musical, lui-même décliné en différentes catégories : drone ambient, drone doom ou métal, etc. De plus en plus il est fait référence à cette démarche minimale de composition, elle se généralise et amplifie l’intérêt et les contributions individuelles à une scène (ou champ d’action) expérimentale dont l’essor n’est encore que récent.

Si, comme pour tout phénomène de banalisation, le risque est que le commun nous prive du singulier, on se réjouira ponctuellement à la découverte de tel ou tel musicien, de telle ou telle manière de faire confirmant l’intérêt de cette pratique de composition. Austral, enregistrement 3 titres reçu du musicien et plasticien belge Yannick Franck, me conforte dans cette idée d’un possible renouvellement de l’usage du drone au sein d’une recherche personnelle d’expression musicale.

Au même titre que la captation, l’amplification et l’agencement intuitif d’éléments du réel, le drone se situe au cœur de la pratique de Yannick Franck, pensé selon des modalités différentes en fonction des occasions, qu’il s’agisse de performances ou d’enregistrements. Avec Austral, le musicien expérimente une fois de plus l’altération drone avec une palette de tonalités qu’il n’est jamais évident de retrouver dans ce type de construction sonore, du fait de la monotonalité (et monochromie) qu’il implique a priori. Les trois pistes proposées ici (insulatis, bois rouge, distance) consistent en des agencements minimalistes de couches et de sous-couches sonores, évoluant au gré de micro-altérations qui enrichissent le chromatisme général. Aucune noirceur, le climat est serein. Chacune des pistes semble converger vers un temps culminant, un moment ou les nappes sont les plus fortes, présentes ou intenses, pour ensuite s’éteindre progressivement. L’idée d’un nomadisme drone, cette manière d’évoluer dans des atmosphères en suspension, est renforcée par le mot servant à nommer (qualifier) cet enregistrement, Austral. Du latin australis, venant de auster signifiant « vent du midi », cet adjectif désigne ce qui se situe du côté sud du globe terrestre, et plus spécialement ce qui se situe près du pôle sud. Sans probablement signifier l’un plutôt que l’autre, je ne parviens, à l’écoute de l’album, à trancher entre deux de ses acceptions, à savoir le vent chaud soufflant du sud, ou le climat austral du pôle sud. Deux sensations plutôt antagonistes. Un nomadisme pertinemment justifié. Un opus recommandable."

Fading Faces - Prishtina

This series was made in Kosovo, where I photographed some plasticized copies of portraits that were hanging for years on the gates of the parliament in Prishtina.

These portrayed people disappeared during the Kosovo War (1998-1999) and their bodies have yet to be found, presumably because they are in Serbian territory and, therefore remain inaccessible to Kosovar authorities. The images have been put on the gates as a protest against the government and to serve as a sort of memorial. Since then they withered over time.

What really struck me was the metaphorical dimension conveyed by the ghostly aspect of these disappearing faces, the interlinkage between reality and its altered representation.

A first set of four pictures have been printed and are exhibited until June at Monos Art Gallery in Liège (B) (Picture By Kresh).

Twelve more prints were shown at Katariina Art Gallery (Helsinki) during an exhibition named HALO, in duo with Inkeri Harri.

It's been a while I had the idea running through my head, trying to figure out the possible aspects of this blog, the possible contents, and not creating it because I couldn't choose a clear direction nor a particular aesthetic more than another. So I finally created this simple page.
It is clear that the blog is going to be a bit chaotic because I don't want to restrict to a single theme or even a central idea. This is only a place where I can share some ideas and observations, projects and reflections as well as various things of interest. Why? At first I'd say I believe it can help me to follow more consciously the events in my life in order to articulate my creative path. Indeed I always lacked a certain structure and writing an online diary might be a nice thing to do. I also believe it can be very stimulating to share ideas and receive comments and appreciations by other people.
So hopefully it is going to be a motor and an extra motivation for me to regularly post some news and other stuffs here. Feel free to comment as much as you want. I'd be pleased to read you.
